Tattoos: The Servus Heritage Festival 2017

Here in Edmonton Alberta, when we think of the Servus Heritage Festival the thoughts of food, family, music, and dancing comes to mind. For me, those were worthwhile things to explore, but I went this year to see if I could find a good variety of tattoos. Since this festival embraces different cultures coming together, I hoped I would find a good variety of tattoos.

One thing that was super popular at the festival this year was Henna Tattoos. There must have been at least ten different pavilions that were offering services to give henna tattoos. I really liked the colourful tattoo the woman already had on her arm.

It was no surprise to find a woman with a beautiful feminine tattoo wanting to take a moment to experience sitting in a luxurious Middle Eastern traditional tea setting.

Good to see people taking the time to have a look at the different posts that were up. There was so much information to absorb in one day. Good thing the festival ran for three days! This guy has a very cool traditional tattoo. It looks to be Polynesian or tribal.

This beautiful lady to the right is Carolina and she is a dancer representing Nicaragua. Carolina is a part of the Desert Rose Dance Studio in Edmonton. In the bottom photo, she is with her dance crew. They got their sexy on with doing a Reggaeton routine. Looked like such a good workout. On her right arm, Carolina has a lovely mermaid tattoo that creates a full sleeve.  And on her left arm, she has a full sleeve of roses.

Unicorn of the Sea. How Upper Canadian can you get with that. This is the tattoo of a Norwhale who are located in Northern Canada in the Hudson Bay. I am a huge fan of this magnificent creature and was absolutely thrilled to see a young woman having one as a tattoo.  Long live the Unicorn of the Sea!

When I see a picture of praying hands with a rosary and a gathering of roses, I often think of Italy or Spain. It just seems to have that vibe to it. The sacred and holy mother.  This beautiful young woman wears it well.

This young man had some interesting arm tattoos that were done in the black and gray style. I am a big fan of crows, so they often catch my eye. To the side of the crow is an hourglass giving this piece a real Edgar Allan Poe feeling. On his other arm is a lovely portrait of a sugar skull woman. It is interesting that both of his tattoos connect with the world of the dead. Really beautiful poetic art work.

This handsome man has the Polish cross with the traditional Falcon. From my observations, I see that a religious icon such as the cross may or may not represent a spirituality, but rather a culture or family crest. I do not know what this means personally to this person, but I wanted to offer that thought.

The First Nations Blues & Rock performer Curt Young has three guitar picks tattooed on his strumming hand.  He had given a great performance at the Aboriginal Pavilion.

Neighbors, Troubles, Heaven, wish I had written the message out on this one. But with the Dove in flight and a red rose, we know there is a spiritual message of inspiration here. Nice arm sleeve, very feminine and tells a story about the person.

Well, we certainly couldn't say this was a good variety of tattoos without having something a little gloomy and doomy, yet at the same time very artsy and appealing. They are both very well done. I met this young woman in the audience while watching the Aboriginal performers.

This is a magnificent arm sleeve tattoo of a green snake. This beautiful young woman wears it with class.

First Nations Rock and Blues singer Jared Sowan wears his Treble Clef tattoo on his right forearm. You know a person is passionate about their profession when they have something that symbolizes it tattooed on them.  And what a charming smile this guy has.

To be honest, by the time I reached this point in the day I was parched and exhausted. I'm sorry but I have no idea who this handsome singer is. I can only tell you he represents Chile and has a very cool 'A' tattooed on his arm. Even though I do not know him, it seemed that this tattoo was perfect for this Chilean cowboy.

This is a fun tattoo which I think may be representing the culture of the neo-video game culture. Load up those life points. Or just a really cool heart design tattoo.

Omgoodness! It's a Tim Burton tattoo. Jack Skellington and Sally. Well, that is just universal.

It was such a bright sunny day that some of the photos had a bit of sun glare on them no matter what I tried to do. I apologize to this lady for not getting a more clear photograph. But alas, you can still see how elaborate and beautiful this exotic arm sleeve is with the scarlet parrot and the beautiful flowers. Very lovely.

When I look at this tattoo, it reminds me of an old film I watched as a kid where a man goes to a traveling carnival and gets turned into a snake creature. But who knows, maybe this snake creature has his back by warding off all danger. I'm hoping there is an interesting story connected to this tattoo.

GRUMPY! was my immediate reaction. And that is all that needs to be said.

This next tattoo is an interesting piece. I am presenting it in two pictures because I would like to display the full arm sleeve, but also call your attention to the top of the shoulder where the warrior is fighting off the snakes. It creates an epic story.

This dad has an arm sleeve displaying a beautiful Japanese scenic picture. Done in soft shading and an intense colourful sun rising up from behind.

This young man has a nautical theme going on with his tattoos. A bit of an adventurer.

This is such a sweet and cheerful tattoo. It totally has that feeling of a day of happy memories. This is also the woman who was getting the henna tattoo at the beginning of this blog post. Life always comes back full circle.
